NCAA Basketball: Texas Tech, Virginia among top 11 for 4-star Deebo Coleman
Virginia Cavaliers
The Cavaliers have been busy on the recruiting trail in the past week. They were a finalist for top-60 forward Trey Kaufman, five-star shooting guard Trevor Keels, and just landed 6’5 New Zealand shooting guard Taine Murray. The team already has Jabri Abdur-Rahim, Casey Morsell, and Reece Beekman on the roster as underclassmen, and each of them is set to have big roles.
If Keels commits first, the pathway to playing time for Coleman would depend on how long he stays in college. There’s also a concern about whether or not the prospect will fit in the defensive scheme that’ll warrant him playing time. However, this is clearly the best team among the 11, and playing in the ACC is a major selling point.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
One of a number of prospects new head coach Steve Forbes is after in his first full recruiting class, Coleman would have a major role as a freshman. He would be replacing a bunch of grad transfer shooting guards that were picked up this offseason, while Virginia Tech transfer Isaiah Wilkins recently received a waiver to play this season.
The two key factors for Coleman to consider for this team is a major ability for playing time out the gate, but also likely have to deal with a rebuilding phase in the tough ACC. If he’s willing to be the first top-tier recruit to join Wake Forest, that would help jumpstart the process.
Based on the options, Deebo Coleman could very well be the No. 1 commit for many of these teams’ 2021 recruiting classes. His shooting will be highly needed in the future and he may not last all four years before going pro. As of now, it seems to be a wide-open process, with a decision possibly coming before the start of the season.
