NBA Draft 2020: Best-case scenarios for all 30 franchises
Detroit Pistons – Draft Tyrese Haliburton
With Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin as the top players, the Pistons are in the bad positions of having to “win now” but don’t have the talent to even make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. With young Sekou Doumbouya on the wing, the franchise is best suited to finding a point guard capable of uplifting the roster around him.
The safest best is Haliburton, who can rack up assists while setting up the offense. With Luke Kennard on the wings and Christian Wood as a starting power forward, there is potential. While most of the projected 1st round point guards are score-first like Reggie Jackson is, the former Cyclone has the all-around game Detroit needs the most.
Golden State Warriors – Draft Obi Toppin or James Wiseman, just not LaMelo Ball
With a healthy Steph Curry and Klay Thompson back and joined by a motivated Draymond Green, the old core of the Warriors will be back for possibly another title run. Andrew Wiggins being around is interesting if the franchise decides to have him long-term. If that’s the case, there’s no need to draft Ball since the starting perimeter would already be set.
The frontcourt is a different matter, with Golden State trying out several centers last season, with none of them working. They could very well take James Wiseman (sorry Charlotte) at No. 2 since Minnesota likely won’t take him. The other option would be to draft Obi Toppin, who may have the highest ceiling in the draft, and slide Green to the five.
That would work in today’s NBA with the smaller centers, but they may end up like Houston and get killed on the boards. But if the Warriors can get this right as they have in the past, the Lakers and Nuggets will have real competition at the top.
