Minnesota Third Guards/Small Forwards

With six listed guards in the Golden Gophers’ projected rotation, one can expect to see Coach Pitino throw out a bunch of lineup combinations with three guards. Gabe Kalscheur, whom I mentioned in the last slide, is one of Minnesota’s top two returning players, along with Marcus Carr.

Averaging over 11.5 points per game for Minnesota last year, Kalscheur is one of my favorite breakout candidates in the Big Ten this season. A career 37.2% shooter from beyond the arc who averaged over seven three-point attempts per game last season, Kalscheur can be one of the elite deep threats in the entire conference. I expect him to play around his 33.3 minutes per game average last year as he heads into his junior season.

Freshman David Mutaf and sophomore Tre’ Williams should also see some playing time at the “3” for the Golden Gophers. The latter, a former top-150 recruit, has a real chance to improve on his underwhelming freshman season. If Williams can make some contributions, it could be huge for the potential depth of this Minnesota team.

Coach Pitino has the option to throw out big or small lineups with his Golden Gophers. Only time will tell, though, as there are a bunch of new pieces that need to mesh together heading into this season.
