Siena Basketball: Jalen Pickett and becoming the next mid-major star
Pro aspirations for Jalen Pickett
Pickett has been a point of interest for NBA teams and scouts since the conclusion of his freshman season, and, obviously, it is easy to see why. He was invited to and participated in the inaugural NBA G League Elite Camp and numerous pre-draft workouts.
If – and when – Pickett is drafted in the coming years, he will be the first MAAC player drafted since 2008 when the Sacramento Kings selected Rider star Jason Thompson with the 12th overall pick.
But until that day comes, Pickett will continue to pursue a conference championship and an NCAA tournament berth with the Saints. They will have their hands full in the MAAC, undoubtedly – Saint Peter’s, Rider, and Monmouth all won 18 games each, and Iona will be a force courtesy of the Rick Pitino hire – but with Pickett and fellow double-digit scorer Manny Camper returning, the Saints should be the preseason favorites.
Just like how Lillard, McCollum, and Morant all received their moments in the national spotlight, Pickett will earn his moment, as well. He is a strong, athletic guard who can score efficiently, serve as a floor general, and gather a carom when needed.
And, he has led his team to success not seen in nearly a decade, just three years removed from one of the worst seasons in program history. One thing can be said for certain, especially if he and the Saints can seal the deal this season with their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2010: Pickett is the next mid-major star in college basketball.
