19. Jón Axel Guðmundsson – Davidson Wildcats

Jón Axel joined Davidson College in 2016. It was not long until Jón Axel would start to get recognition from the rest of the conference. On December 26, 2016, he was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week.

As a sophomore, Guðmundsson won the Atlantic 10 Conference championship with Davidson and helped the team advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Guðmundsson is probably best known for his junior season with the Davidson Wildcats. The guard was named to the Preseason Third-Team All-Atlantic 10 prior to the season’s start. He would start to get attention from the rest of the league with 33 points in a Davidson 57–53 victory over Wichita State in the opening round of the Charleston Classic.

Weeks later on February 22nd, 2019, he posted a triple-double, 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, in a 75–66 victory over Rhode Island. The impressive stat lines continued week after week for Guðmundsson and a Davidson team that would make a push for the NCAA tournament. He was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after averaging 23.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.5 assists during the week of February 18th.

At the end of the season, Guðmundsson was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year as well as being selected to the First-team All-Atlantic 10 after averaging 17.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game for the season.

Jón Axel declared for the NBA draft after his junior season, however, he quickly withdrew his name. He would decide to return back to Davidson for his senior season. In his senior year, he became the first Division I men’s player since 1993 to hit career marks of 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 500 assists, 200 made 3-pointers, and 150 steals.

Guðmundsson is now playing overseas for the  Fraport Skyliners of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) in Iceland where he is originally from.
