Big East Basketball: Creighton, Villanova lead latest power rankings
10. Georgetown Hoyas (1-1)
- Wins: vs UMBC (70-62)
- Losses: vs Navy (78-71)
- Next Game: Sunday 12/6 at 4:30 pm ET vs No. 11 West Virginia
Georgetown lost their top six of eight scorers in the offseason and are undergoing a massive rebuild. The two biggest offseason losses from 2019-20 were guard Mac McClung (15.7 ppg in 2019-20), who transferred to Texas Tech, and 7-foot center, Omer Yurtseven (15.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg in 2019-20), who graduated from the program.
Without their top two scorers from last season, the Hoyas are lacking offensive firepower to start off the 2020-21 season. Through two games, Georgetown has been held to a low 39.3 percent shooting and 29.3 percent from three-point range. The Hoyas are also struggling at the free-throw line, converting only 18-for-31 shots (58.1 percent of their free throws).
In their season opener, the Hoyas were able to pull out the victory 70-62 over UMBC, despite shooting 37.3 percent from the floor and committing 20 turnovers as a team.
However, Georgetown’s second game of the season was a different story. The Hoyas suffered a bad loss on their resume, losing 78-71 against an experienced Navy Midshipmen squad from the Patriot League.
Georgetown once again had a difficult time hitting their shots, converting on only 41.7 percent of their shots. The Hoyas also struggled to force turnovers and could not stop Navy’s offense, allowing the Midshipmen to only nine turnovers and 50 percent shooting.
The most disappointing part about Georgetown’s loss to Navy was that the Hoyas bench was only able to score one point between four reserves in a combined 42 minutes.
Through two games, senior guard Jahvon Blair (20 ppg, 7 rpg, 3.5 apg) currently leads the Hoyas in scoring. He has been a high-volume shooting option but has yet to be efficient. Blair is just 14-for-37 shooting (37.8 percent) and 4-for-19 from three-point range (21.1 percent) in his first two games.
With Georgetown’s struggles from the perimeter early in the season, the Hoyas should look to get the ball inside more. Sophomore, 6-foot-11 center, Qudus Wahab (14 ppg, 9.5 rpg), has taken the step up so far during his second season, converting on 13-of-19 shots (68.4 percent), while scoring a career-high 16 points against Navy.
Suffering a bad loss to start the season to a mid-major is brutal and a resume wrecker when determining at-large bids come March. Georgetown’s schedule will not get any easier with two more non-conference games before Big East play opens up for Georgetown on Friday, December 11.
Georgetown has the opportunity to put themselves back on the right track with a quality matchup at home against No. 11 West Virginia today. The Hoyas will then take on the Coppin State Eagles on Tuesday, which lost to Duke by just 10 points.
The loss Tuesday against Navy will hopefully serve as a wake-up call. Georgetown will need to turn things around quick or this will be a long season.
