Timme stopping Garza

It is impossible not to discuss Drew Timme and Luka Garza in any discussion about the National Player of the Year Award, let alone when their respective teams are playing. The added bonus is, on Saturday, they will be playing against each other. Not only is Gonzaga and Iowa among the best three teams in the nation, but Timme and Garza are among the top three best players.

To state the two centers are going to be important for their teams’ success is not only an understatement, but it is also blatantly apparent. It is the way in which each will attempt to impact the game that is worth exploring. Their contribution on the defensive end will be as important as on the offensive one.

As it has been proven throughout the Hawkeyes’ first five games, it is difficult to guard Luka Garza, as he is averaging over 30 points per game on 68 percent shooting. At 6’11 / 265 pounds, once Garza is able to seal his defender off in the painted area the guards swing the ball and pass into the post, 68 percent of the time the end result is two points.

While it will be discussed later, whichever combination of Corey Kispert, Jalen Suggs, Andrew Nembhard, and Joel Ayayi is on the cour for Gonzaga, they will not be able to double down off of the shooters.

Therefore, it is up to 6’10 / 235 pound Timme to defend him in the paint. It would not be surprising if Coach Mark Few attempted to replicate the success North Carolina had playing Armando Bacot and Day’Ron Sharpe, by playing Oumar Ballo more than his seven minutes per game.
