25. Virginia Tech

After getting drubbed by Penn State in the week prior, the Hokies bounced back in a nice way in the past few days. They defeated a ranked Clemson squad, 66-60 before handling Coppin State by 40 points this weekend. Nine players scored at least nine points, with Jalen Cone and Nahiem Alleyne each having 18.

Virginia Tech will take things easy this week with a home game against Longwood. Barring a massive upset, they’ll enter full ACC play with a 7-1 record and a pair of wins over ranked opponents. They’ve been a great early surprise so far.

24. Richmond

The Spiders had three tough road games last week, which could’ve made or break their at-large hopes. It started rough with a blowout loss at West Virginia, with their physicality just too much. However, the team was able to bounce back with a solid pair of road wins over Vanderbilt and Loyola-Chicago, although the ladder was a near choke job.

Richmond will get to come back home with a game against Hofstra from the Colonial Athletic Conference. After that, they’ll be entering Atlantic 10 play as a favorite, with a major target on its back.

23. Xavier

The Musketeers have been on a bit of break, with no games this week to discuss. But they’re back in action in a big way, with marquee matchups against both Marquette and Creighton in the next few days. Their unbeaten record will be surely tested in a big way, let’s see if they can at least get a split.

22. San Diego State

There won’t be any more unbeaten map updates for San Diego State fans this season after the team fell at home to former Mountain West rival BYU. The Cougars were dominating throughout until Matt Mitchell went ballistic in the second half. He scored a career-high 35 points but the rest of the roster could only muster up 27 in the 72-62 defeat.

The Aztecs still aren’t done with the WCC, as they have a neutral site matchup with the Saint Mary’s Gaels. They’ll be the favorite as long as Jordan Schakel doesn’t go scoreless in the first 35 minutes again.
