21. Ohio State

It was a split for the Buckeyes this past week. They lost their Big Ten opener to Purdue, having to play without their best player EJ Lidell. The good news was that he was able to return in a limited capacity this weekend against UCLA, playing 19 minutes and scoring nine points. Duane Washington Jr.’s 14 points led the balanced effort in Ohio State’s win.

The Buckeyes have another tough game coming up, this time against Rutgers. Their Big Ten schedule is relatively soft in the first few weeks, all things considered, so sneaking a win against a ranked foe in the Scarlet Knights could allow them to go on a run before the gauntlet in January. Hopefully, Liddell will be close to 100% by then.

20. Florida State

The week started out fine for the Seminoles, taking care of Georgia Tech by 13 points in their ACC opener. Yet they somehow went to sleep this weekend, allowing a shocking 86 points to lose by 12 to Central Florida. It’s hard to remember a worse defensive performance for Florida State in recent memory.

The Seminoles will look to improve on their defense with a game against Gardner-Webb, their last tune-up before going into ACC play full-time. They’ll need Scottie Barnes and company to round out some loose edges if they’re going to compete for a repeat regular-season title.

19. Virginia

The Cavaliers have been on pause for over a week but will be back on the court on Tuesday against William & Mary. After that is an epic matchup of elite defense vs elite offense on Saturday against the No. 1 Gonzaga Basketball. Virginia won’t be able to keep up with the Bulldogs in terms of scoring, so they’ll have to hope that their pack-line defense can help them pull off the upset.
