Few programs personify the 2020-21 NCAA Basketball season as the Demon Deacons, who didn’t play a single game in the month of December. Between their own pauses and other opponents being canceled, this team will have gone over 35 days between games.

That’s why they’re in last place despite being 2-0 on the season. Their wins to start the year came in a 111-51 beatdown of Delaware State, as well as a 71-60 victory over Longwood. It was a collective effort, with Jonah Antonio leading the way with 13 ppg in the two games, while fellow grad transfer Ian Dubose is averaging 11.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, and 4.5 apg.

What hurts about this situation is that Wake Forest was the ACC Basketball team that needed to play games in December the most. They had a brand new head coach in Steve Forbes and had a completely revamped roster after losing their top four scorers from last season. That includes four new grad transfer pickups and other returning players looking to have bigger roles.

The hope is that the start of the new year will have the Demon Deacons on the court more, boosted by incoming four-star freshman point guard Carter Whitt. Whether he gets minutes this season is yet to be determined but the team will need all hands on deck for their upcoming set of opponents, with road games at Duke, Georgia Tech, and Virginia next.
