Steve Wojciechowski – Marquette Golden Eagles

Another coach who has ties to Duke is Marquette’s Steve Wojciechowski. I’m pretty sure I spelled that right, but seriously, WoJo has the Golden Eagles trending downward. Buzz Williams laid the groundwork and I think that is very pivotal in this assessment. The winning culture Buzz passed down was significant before moving onto Virginia Tech.

Like Hurley, there have been 20-win seasons, however, there has been little to no success in the postseason. In his two NCAA Tournament appearances, he is 0-2 losing by a combined 39 points. The talent he’s had in Milwaukee was top-notch too. Whether it be two-time All-American, Markus Howard, or a top 20 NBA Draft pick in Henry Ellenson, the Marquette faithful can’t be too happy without anything to show for it.

Furthermore, the Golden Eagles had Deonte Burton and the Hauser brothers transfer out of the program. Burton had a tremendous career at Iowa State and is a fringe NBA player, while Sam and Joey Hauser are having success with their new schools. When top tier talent is leaving your program, something must be off.

The Golden Eagles are the definition of mediocrity with an 8-8 record. They have yet to record a three-game win streak on the year. They had a golden, no pun intended, opportunity to achieve that, but dropped a home game to lowly DePaul. The talent isn’t what it used to be, so WoJo will have his hands’ full retooling and resurrecting Marquette back to the better days when they had guys like Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler.
