Marquette Basketball: 5 candidates to replace Steve Wojciechowski as head coach
By Joey Loose
Wes Miller
When these jobs open, there’s a number of coaches that seem to pop up on the lists for just about every opening. Sometimes, it takes a few years before these coaches can be lured away from their mid-major havens, but could this be the kind of opening that pries Miller from UNC Greensboro?
Miller won a national championship as a player at North Carolina, though the point guard’s playing career ended soon after graduation. After a few years as an assistant coach, he was thrust into the head coaching job at UNC Greensboro and has really run with it. He’s turned the Spartans into one of the SoCon’s best programs, leading them to his second NCAA Tournament this season. He’s actually won 125 games combined in the last five seasons.
Miller is a fantastic young coach and has certainly proven himself; he’s ready for a power conference coaching job. The biggest roadblock between him and Marquette is that he’s a North Carolina guy; would he find success out in Wisconsin?
When Roy Williams retires in a few years, would he be lured back to Chapel Hill, especially if his years at Marquette are a success? If you’re Marquette, you don’t worry about five years from now, you’re trying to get the best coach possible and Miller has certainly shown his ability.
