NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target North Carolina transfer Garrison Brooks
Texas Longhorns
New head coach Chris Beard was able to bring former Texas Tech commit and top-50 wing prospect Jaylon Tyson along with him to the Longhorns. He also has some key guards returning such as Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones. The issue is the frontcourt, with Kai Jones going pro and projected first-round pick Greg Brown likely to follow. And with Royce Hamm Jr. and Kamaka Hepa having transferred out, there aren’t any bigs on the roster with D-I experience.
Brooks could come in and play a large role for Texas next season as the featured big man. Whether he wants to play with the Longhorns in the Big 12 over the SEC and ACC is another question but Coach Beard has a nice history of sending players to the NBA when he was with the Red Raiders.
Virginia Cavaliers
Another team Brooks is well aware of is Virginia, who needs a big man in a big way. Both Jay Huff and Sam Hauser are moving on, while backup forward Justin McCoy has transferred out. Brooks is the kind of center that can fit with the Cavaliers on both ends of the court, and provide the offense for them to remain as ACC contenders.
After landing Indiana guard Armaan Franklin, Virginia will be focusing more on the frontcourt in the next couple of weeks. If they can’t land five-star prospect Efton Reid, maybe they’ll make a run at a familiar face in Garrison Brooks. We’ve see inter-conference transfers already this offseason so why not have another with a former Tar Heel going to Virginia?
