It is important to have a strong staff around a first-year coach

For Howard and Hardaway to succeed it was extra important for them to have a strong staff to help them with everything that comes with running a college basketball program, due to their lack of coaching experience at the NCAA level. While Davis has spent years on the bench, this is his first head job, so having someone with headman experience as well as guys that will understand and carry out the vision you have for the program.

Davis covered all the bases in naming his staff. His staff should have no problem implementing Davis’ vision because the entire staff is former Tar Heels. Jeff Lebo who played with Davis for Coach Smith returns to North Carolina to assist Davis after having four different stops as a head coach. Davis has kept two fellow members of Williams staff, retaining assistant coach Brad Frederick and former Tar Heel great Sean May to fill out the staff.

Having a strong, staff may not be as important for Davis as those with less coaching experience, but having built a staff made entirely of Tar Heels will give Davis the continuity he will need in building the network and relationships a coach must have in order to have a successful program.
