NCAA Basketball: 5 way-too-early winners of class of 2022 recruiting cycle
By Matt Melton
Ohio State Buckeyes
After putting together a Top 50 ranked class in the country during the 2021 cycle, Ohio State currently has the #1 ranked 2022 recruiting class in the country.
Head coach Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes are off to a hot start in the 2022 cycle, partly due to them having three current commits, which is tied for the most in the country. While the Buckeyes will once again be one of the top teams in the Big Ten in 2021-22, this 2022 class could be their best since 2019 when they landed three Top 50 overall players.
This Ohio State 2022 class is currently headlined by 4-star guard and Top 50 national player Roddy Gayle Jr. Standing at 6’4, Gayle Jr. is one of the Top 10 shooting guards in the Class of 2022 and has been committed to the Buckeyes since November of 2020.
Ohio State also has two other guard commits currently in 4-star PG Bruce Thornton and 3-star SG Bowen Hardman. Thornton was one of the point guards for one of the nation’s top high school basketball teams a year ago (Milton, GA), while Hardman, an Ohio native, has been committed to the Buckeyes since May of 2020.
While it is still way too early in the 2022 recruiting cycle, Ohio State appears set to have a strong class. They will still likely add 1-2 frontcourt pieces at some point, making the Buckeyes a prime candidate to have a Top 25 class in 2022.
