NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top-100 PG Tre Holloman final 6 teams
Minnesota Golden Gophers
With Marcus Carr and Jamal Mashburn now gone, new head coach Ben Johnson brought in several guards, including JUCO transfer Abdoulaye Thiam, and combo guards, Elijah Stevens and Luke Loewe. None of them are proven point guards at the power conference level and both Stevens and Loewe will only be around for one more year.
Not only is Minnesota the “hometown” option for Holloman, but this is also the spot with guaranteed available playing time right out the gate. The obvious concern is that this program isn’t in a position to win big anytime soon and if there isn’t a lot of good surrounding talent, the point guard could struggle as a result. Besides, who knows if another group of transfers comes in next offseason to take the point guard spot?
Oklahoma State Cowboys
All-American guard Cade Cunningham was the de facto point guard for the Cowboys last year but with him gone, senior Isaac Likekele will go back to his role as the lead facilitator for the offense. But they’ll need a point guard in the 2022 class as there isn’t a true one currently on the roster. Both Rondel Walker and Kansas transfer Bryce Thompson are more of the combo variety.
If Holloman picks Oklahoma State, he could get some real playing time as a freshman and get to lead the offense. And he’ll have a really good supporting cast and a good chance to make the NCAA Tournament on a yearly basis.
Each of the six options has “pro” selling points but also a couple of “cons”. But the Cowboys are the one that checks all the usual boxes compared to the others and could be the one that Holloman ultimately decides.
