NBA Draft 2021: Biggest needs for all 30 teams ahead of draft day
Orlando Magic – No. 5, 8, 33
Biggest needs: Shooting guard, frontcourt help
After trading arguably their three best players before the midseason deadline, the Magic has made the worst collection of talent heading into the draft. At least in terms of proven production, as the young core of Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz, and Jonathan Isaac has promise and will be the leaders for next season. With two top-10 picks, Orlando is in a position to just grab the best available, with at No. 5 could be forward Johnathan Kuminga, who looked great for the G League Ignite team as a pure scorer.
At No. 8, the Magic should be looking for the best big man available, which could be Kai Jones of Texas. He’d be the replacement for Nikola Vučević and would be an offensive upgrade over Mo Bamba, who is on the chopping block heading into next season.
Philadelphia 76ers – No. 28, 50
Biggest need: Stretch frontcourt player
The status of star point/forward Ben Simmons has the 76ers’ draft plans in the air, as he may or may not be around by the end of draft night. Either way, this team still could improve on a couple of areas, including adding a ball-handler or stretch forward that can add spacing, which would benefit both Simmons and star center Joel Embiid on the court.
Dwight Howard is a pending free agent and looked unplayable at times off the bench. Filip Petrusev and Matthew Hurt are the top stretch forward options if Philly wants to go that route, or could add a physical big man in Charles Bassey of Western Kentucky, who is a good offensive big man. But if they know that a trade will occur, adding a scoring guard will make sure they have depth in the backcourt regardless of Simmons’ availability.
