UNC Basketball: Analyzing Tar Heels 2021 incoming recruiting class
4. Dontrez Styles
The Kinston (NC) native was rated just a few spots ahead of Dunn by the national rating services. However, Styles appears more ready to contribute right away as he can really. He also may have a little easier time getting on the floor as the Tar Heels don’t have as many forwards as guards on the roster. Nevertheless, I don’t expect the 6-7 forward to see 20 minutes a game.
Styles is a high-energy, athletic guy who is a straight-line driver. Defensively, he has the ability to guard multiple positions and is a superb rebounder. Styles does have to improve his ball-handling and 3-point shooting.
3. Justin McKoy
The 6-8, 221-pound sophomore forward, who transferred from Virginia, will likely be the second big off the bench and likely the team’s No. 7 or 8 player. McKoy saw his role increase a little over his freshman campaign last season and was fairly productive in his limited time. He averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in less than 12 minutes over 19 appearances including four starts.
“I’ve always wanted a player like Justin,” Coach Davis said in a statement, “He’s a versatile ‘4,’ someone who can play small and power forward. When we scout other teams, that has been one type of player that has caused us problems: a player who can post up a smaller guy or take a bigger defender out on the perimeter and drive or shoot. Defensively, Justin has the ability to switch all ball screens, is a great rebounder, and plays with tremendous effort. I will never have to coach effort with him.
