ACC Basketball: Top 20 impact transfers for 2021-22 season
18. Deivon Smith | 6’1 Guard | Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Deivon Smith looks for a fresh start with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets out of the transfer portal from the Mississippi State Bulldogs. There’s certainly room for him to grow in the Yellow Jackets backcourt in 2021-22 with some key losses.
Smith did a little bit of everything while appearing in mainly a reserve guard role, appearing in 33 games with eight starts in 2020-21. In 22.5 minutes of action, he produced 5.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in his first college season.
While didn’t get off to a nice shooting stroke, by the time conference games arrived, he was shooting 35.1 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from 3-point land. With a college season under his belt already, he’ll look to have a better re-do of his freshman campaign from a shooting standpoint for the entire season.
With the departure of Jose Alvarado and Moses Wright, there’s a big hole in the offensive production left to fill. Smith looks to play that role and then some after getting his feet wet in the SEC ranks in 2020-21.
He’s shown he’s a capable guard off the bench while still playing big minutes. If he can make the transition a smooth one from SEC to ACC basketball play, look for the Yellow Jackets to find themselves in the NCAA Tournament conversation.
