Big East Basketball: 10 key questions looming for 2021-22 season
8. Can Dwon Odom breakout in the backcourt?
The Xavier Musketeers are another squad in Big East basketball that returns a bulk of their production from 2020-21 looking to shake back in 2021-22. The Covid-19 pandemic slowed them down as they went just 13-8 on the season after starting out 8-0 and missed the 2021 NCAA Tournament but with Zach Freemantle and Paul Scruggs returning,
Freemantle and Scruggs are two players who both have a chance to win the Big East Player of the Year award. Freemantle did a bulk of the scoring (16.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg) while Scruggs handled the playmaking (5.7 apg) and defending (1.7 spg).
They’re a dynamic pair on the wing and in the paint and as the emergence of their backcourt continues, it will be interesting to see how things go in Year 2 for Dwon Odom.
Odom is an explosive guard that does well to get to his spots and produce. After all, he put up 6.6 ppg, 2.9 apg, and 2.6 rpg as a freshman. In 2021-22, he’ll be looked upon to do a whole lot more as the Musketeers look to turn a corner.
With some depth and weapons on the perimeter, if the Musketeers can get Odom going and find success, look for this squad to make some noise up until Selection Sunday.
