NCAA Basketball: 12 potential milestones to watch for 2021-22 season
Jay Wright – Villanova
Milestone: 500 career wins
Milestones are not solely reserved for players, every once in a while a coach is able to get in on the action, and this year, one of those coaches is Jay Wright. After 27 seasons and two NCAA Division I Championships, the Bucknell Alumnus is ten victories away from 500. Since moving to the Big East Conference to be the ‘bench boss’ at Villanova, the Wildcats have missed the NCAA Tournament four times, three of those missed tournaments were the first three years Coach Wright was at the helm.
The six-time Big East Coach of the Year is poised to surpass the 500 milestone with Collin Gillespie, Justin Moore, and Jermaine Samuels returning as double-digit scorers. It is not a “hot take” to state the Villanova will be challenging for the Big East Regular Season Championship after an 11-4 conference record, and yes, winning the Big East Regular Season Championship.
Joining the ranks of existing Wildcats is the nation’s No. 22 ranked recruiting class led by No. 55 on the RSCI recruit Jordan Longino. The shooting guard is not projected to be a starter, but he will have an opportunity to learn from an experienced backcourt in order to help Coach Wright reach the milestone of 600 wins in the near future.
