Purdue Basketball: Projected starting lineup and depth chart for 2021-22 season
Power forward
The forward group will be a little deeper this season thanks to a couple of four-star recruits in power forwards Trey Kaufman-Renn and Caleb Furst. Both guys are top-75 recruits according to 247sports and should see immediate rotation minutes for Purdue. The 6-9 Kaufman-Renn was Indiana’s Player of the Year after averaging 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and nearly two blocks per game, leading Silver Creek High School to a state title.
Furst was a teammate of Ivey on the U19 World Cup team, the 6-10 big man from Fort Wayne averaged seven points and four rebounds in the tournament. He was voted Indiana’s Mr. Basketball and led his high school, Blackhawk Christian to a state title as well putting up a stat line of 21.4/14.1/3/2.2 as a senior. This duo should give Williams some help in the frontcourt and wouldn’t be surprised to see them help out the lone guy in the next group, the center position.
Gillis is still likely to be the starting power forward after averaging five points and four rebounds and for a team not known for their assists (114th in the country), Gillis was 5th on the team in that category. I think he will be a more consistent contributor on the glass this season as he averaged just under five rebounds per game from February on last season, but the two newcomers give Painter some lineup versatility he didn’t have last season.
