Point Guard

Caleb Love and RJ Davis did a masterful job of sharing the point guard duties although Davis started 10 out of 11 games in 2020-21 before coming off the bench for good. Davis could be in the running for the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year award heading into his sophomore campaign.

Look for both to share heavy minutes once again as the Tar Heels don’t have much depth at the lead guard spot. It wouldn’t be a total surprise if a freshman or two was utilized if either gets in foul trouble.

Love should retain the starting point guard role after producing 10.5 ppg, 3.5 apg, 2.6 rpg, and 1.2 spg in his freshman year. He was consistent scoring the ball in the backcourt and with more weapons on the interior, look for him to do more damage in the distribution department with assists.

With a year under his belt, his shooting efficiency and shot selection should improve as well. He shot 26.6 percent from behind the arc in 2020-21.

Davis was one of the Tar Heels best shooters off the bench by the season’s end, shooting 32.3 percent from behind the arc while averaging 8.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg, and 1.9 apg in his freshman season. He’ll be looked upon to run the offense more with some frontcourt depth in 2021-22.
