Point Guard

Xavier Johnson is the leading name that should battle for starter minutes alongside Rob Phinisee and Khristian Lander. Johnson spent the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Panthers before hitting the transfer portal this past season.

He’s a proven floor general that averaged 14.2 ppg, 5.7 apg, 3.4 rpg, and 1.3 spg in 2020-21 and should find more solid footing leading the scoring attack with Indiana basketball.

The 6-foot-3 floor general fits Woodson’s uptempo style of play very well and possesses veteran experience as a scorer and distributor. Across 84 appearances (81 starts), he dished 4.9 assists per contest including a season-high 5.7 this past year. If he can prove he can make sound decisions with the ball in his hands, he should find success.

Phinisee started in 24 of 27 appearances this past season for the Hoosiers, but that could change in the first year of the Mike Woodson era. He put up 7.1 ppg, 2.9 apg, and 2.3 rpg but struggled shooting from 3-point range at 26 percent. If he can improve his perimeter shooting ahead of tipoff, he should challenge Johnson for the starting job.

Lander is the third name that should see increased minutes after appearing in 26 games for Indiana basketball this past season. The 6-foot-2 guard put up 2.1 ppg and 1.2 apg in 10.1 minutes of action. Look for his role to increase in 2021-22.
