NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga exposed, DePaul unbeaten among key takeaways
Three-pointers on a career pace
The NCAA began keeping track – nationwide- of three-point field goals starting in the 1986-87 season. In the inaugural season of players having the opportunity to get an extra point by making a shot from a further away, 9.2 three-point field goals teams attempted per game, the fewest of any season. Not surprisingly, 1986-87 has the highest three-point percentage in NCAA history. The high three-point percentage did translate into more points, as the 72.8 points per game by teams ranks No.30.
Since the 1986-87 season, the average amount of times that teams put up three-pointers per game has never decreased from one year to the next. There has been a handful of times when it remained the same, but it has never fallen. This season sees teams attempting an average of 23 three-pointers per game. while the average shooting percentage is the second-lowest in NCAA history at 33.8 percentage
The more attempts have resulted in more makes as the top seven seasons of made field goals are from the 2015-16 season or later. The makes have not resulted in a huge upswing of points as the 2021-22 season is ranked at No.25. With Riley Miller, Lamar Norman, and Noah Friedel leading the way on made three-pointers, the rate at which three-pointers are put up per game show no sign of slowing down.
