SEC Basketball power rankings: Alabama rises, Kentucky and Arkansas drops
Texas A&M was 24-24 over Buzz Williams’ first two seasons in College Stations. That will likely change for the better this season.
That said, the Aggies have lost their two biggest games of the season to Wisconsin at the Maui Invitational in Las Vegas and this past Saturday to TCU in Houston. They do have wins over Notre Dame and Butler in Las Vegas, though.
As has been the case with each of the bottom six teams in this set of power rankings, Texas A&M’s most glaring weaknesses come on the offensive end. The Aggies are prone to turnovers and struggle to score in the paint due to their lack of size (No. 303 in average height).
Williams has utilized this team’s depth with 11 players averaging 10+ minutes per game and just one player averaging 10+ points per game—Quenton Jackson (12.1 PPG). Defensively, they rank in the top 30 nationally in eFG% and 3P% defense and are No. 13 in forced turnover rate. Junior G Andre Gordon has also been terrific, ranking second in the SEC in offensive rating and assist-to-turnover ratio.
An upcoming game against Oregon State in Corvallis will be A&M’s most challenging remaining non-conference game, although quite winnable. If The Aggies can win that and then push .500 in SEC play they will likely challenge for an NCAA Tournament bid which would be impressive considering they were picked to finish twelfth in the league this season.
