2. Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilermakers had missed out on another Big 12 transfer in Nigel Pack from Miami, who ultimately didn’t them after a couple of weeks of recruiting. They’ve been in the mix for several high-profile point guard transfers to not only replace star guard and future NBA Draft lottery pick Jaden Ivey, but also Isaiah Thompson and Eric Hunter Jr. in the backcourt.

That leaves Ethan Morton as the lone returning veteran guard, along with incoming point guards, Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer. Those are good long-term options for the program but they’re in a position to win next year, with 7’4 starting center Zach Edey set to come back for the 2022-23 campaign. Without Trevion Williams to share minutes around, Edey will be an All-American candidate and someone Purdue can ride to the NCAA Tournament and potentially make a run.

But the Boilermakers are going to need more talent to make that happen in the backcourt. One big selling point is that compared to other options on this list, Hunter will be the undisputed lead guard on the offense and have the ball in his hands all the time, just like Ivey previously did.

However, there’s a question as to whether or not Hunter will spend his time with the ball passing it to Edey down low all the time, which wouldn’t be the best thing for his stats and draft stock. Boilermaker point guards have mostly been pass-first guys that don’t score much so does the style match up here? Purdue could make that case but so can the top option too.
