NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 6 finalists for Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter
1. Kansas Jayhawks
Although they’re the reigning national champions, the Jayhawks aren’t without their flaws as a potential transfer destination. Remy Martin is gone but the team still has three other ball-handlers on the roster, including Joseph Yesufu, Bobby Pettiford, and Dajuan Harris. Hunter would start over all of them but Harris emerged as a key rotational player and will get minutes one way or another next season.
There’s also a non-0% chance that Kansas deals with a potential postseason ban if the NCAA comes down with a ruling on the program’s alledged recruiting infractions, which has been hanging over the program for the past several years.
But that’s about it, as the Jayhawks has arguably the most to offer for Hunter. The Big 12 program was the biggest name on the list even before winning the national title and Martin went from a losing situation at Arizona State the year prior to now having a ring. Hunter would become the led guard and focal point of the offense after losing All-American Ochai Agbaji.
There are few bigger national stages to play on than Kansas, who needs a point guard this offseason. Hunter knows them very well, scoring 20 points combined in two meetings last season. He’ll be surrounded by a better supporting cast and assuming they’re eligible for the postseason, could make another deep run in 2023.
