3. G Taurus Samuels, Minnesota

Taurus season is over, but Minnesota hopes Taurus Samuels can steer some shooting into the Golden Gophers’ backcourt.

Samuels has an Ivy League pedigree, spending his entire collegiate career up to this point with Dartmouth. He’s played for three years, as the 2020-21 season was canceled due to the pandemic.

As a senior starter, Samuels averaged 9.4 points per game last season, a career-best. Despite playing 28.5 minutes per game, he also did a great job of limiting his turnovers, committing only 19 on the whole year.

The skill that will make or break Samuels in Minnesota is his three-point shooting. He launched threes at a good clip, attempting at least 70 in each of his three seasons. But he hasn’t yet proven to be an elite shooter – he’s hit only 29.5 percent of his attempts in his career, though his 31.3 percent make rate last year was his best.

Samuels may not be asked to do more on the offensive end than stand in the corner and try to get his shooting stroke going. The offense is going to be geared around Jamison Battle and fellow transfer Dawson Garcia.

Samuels has the steadiness that warrants emerging as the lead guard for the Golden Gophers off the bench.
