When a coach takes a new job, at least one player always seems to follow in his footsteps. For new Maryland coach Kevin Willard, that player is guard Jahari Long.

Long did not get a lot of run during his second season at Seton Hall. He only appeared in five games for the Pirates. He did make the most of his appearance in the season opener, dishing a career-high six assists against FDU.

But Long suffered a right knee injury, which ended his season and required surgery in December. He should be ready to roll by the start of next season.

Long played much more as a freshman, appearing in 19 games. He couldn’t do much with his limited playing time, though, scoring 19 points against 13 turnovers. This season, he had more turnovers (five) than points (four).

For Long, the transfer is a shot at a fresh start. He’s clearly third in the pecking order of transfer guards headed to College Park, with Jahmir Young and Donald Carey also ready to suit up for the Terrapins. But a chance to start anew could get him some significant minutes off the bench if he can prove himself before the season.

The former three-star recruit enters a picture of very little depth at the point guard position for the Terps. Long has shown he can be a distributor but has only made 26.9 percent of his shot attempts during his collegiate career, something he’ll need to improve quickly.

Still, there’s an opportunity for Long to carve out a role at Maryland. His familiarity with Willard and his coaching should be to the guard’s benefit.
