NBA Draft 2022: Draft grades for all 1st round pick selections
22. Minnesota Timberwolves – C Walker Kessler (Auburn Tigers) – Draft Grade: B-
Kessler was the nation’s leading shot-blocker in college and a 7’0 center that can immediately add to the Wolve’s interior defense. But based on where Christian Koloko, who ranked in a similar area went (No. 33 overall), it can be viewed as a little bit of a reach. But considering the lack of depth of true impact centers in the draft, Minnesota can’t be blamed for filling out a need.
23. Memphis Grizzlies – F David Roddy (Colorado State Rams) – Draft Grade: D
The issue isn’t the fit, as Roddy fits with Memphis and their unique set of frontcourt players. The problem is that he would’ve easily been available at 29 when they had the pick before, or even No. 38 in the second round. It’s very poor value in the first round and it’s also going to be hard to envision Roddy getting a spot in the crowded frontcourt.
24. Milwaukee Bucks – SF MarJon Beauchamp (NBA G League) – Draft Grade: B
Without there being a point guard or true center to realistically take, going after a wing with the most promise makes sense. And Beauchamp, a former five-star prospect that has taken on a unique journey to get to this point, has high long-term potential. If they hit a home run here, it only helps solidify them as a title contender for years to come.
