Big Ten Basketball: Top impact transfer for each team for 2022-23 season
Dawson Garcia, 6’11 Forward/Center, Minnesota Golden Gophers
Dawson Garcia was a member of the UNC Tar Heels, briefly in 2021-22, and then he wasn’t as it looked as though the Minnesota native was a bit homesick. He didn’t appear in a game following an appearance on Jan. 22 and before fans knew it, he was in the transfer portal.
Now, Garcia is closer to home and ready to get things going again in the Big Ten with the Minnesota Golden Gophers after appearing in 16 games with the Tar Heels this past season.
Garcia’s production wasn’t all that bad, either, as he still managed to put up 9.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg across 20.6 minutes per game, shooting 40.5 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from 3-point range before stepping away and ultimately hitting the transfer portal.
He’s spent a year in the Big East at Marquette and a year in the ACC with the Tar Heels so making a leap to the Big Ten with the Golden Gophers should certainly raise their overall profile as a team.
Head coach Ben Johnson enters Year 2 with nearly a complete overhaul of his roster from 2021-22 with the lone key returner being Jamison Battle. They’ll need to get Garcia acclimated right away to what they want to do if they hope for things to improve in 2022-23.
