8. Tyler Herro – Kentucky
This 6’5 guard from Milwaukee has certainly had an interesting journey in the NBA, but Herro was already a revered prospect in the college game. A four-star and one of the top recent players from Wisconsin, Herro made his way to Kentucky, playing for John Calipari as many top recruits have done in recent years. He spent just his freshman year in college but did pretty solid work during that one year in Lexington.
During that campaign, Herro averaged 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game for the Wildcats, finishing as the team’s second-leading scorer. He had a career-high 29 points in a late-season win over Arkansas and helped guide Kentucky to the Elite Eight later in the year. Herro led the team with a 19-point effort over Houston in the Sweet Sixteen. He made just over 35% of his long-range shots on the season and was certainly utilized as one of the Wildcats’ most important shooters.
His impactful freshman campaign saw him named Second Team All-SEC, ranking among the conference’s leaders in points and field goal percentage. He was a solid offensive player who had decent defensive metrics as well and was certainly one of the key pieces on that Elite Eight run for the Wildcats. A few months later, he was taken by the Miami Heat with the 13th pick of the 2019 NBA Draft and has been a key player there for the last three years.
