NCAA Basketball: Top 25 impact transfers midway through 2022-23 season
24. Erik Stevenson – West Virginia Mountaineers
2022-23 stats: 14.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.5 apg
In his first four seasons, Stevenson was a below-40% shooter from the field and 33% from three-point range. His being a team’s top scoring usually meant bad things. But the 5th-year senior has really come into a zone to this point, averaging 53% from the field and 47% from deep.
He’s had at least eight points in every game this season, including 16 against Pitt in the Backyard Brawl rivalry win, as well as a season-high 22 points versus Buffalo. Stevenson’s consistency has been a big boost to a team filled with newcomers, that can rely on him each night. It’ll get tougher in Big 12 play but in order for the Mountaineers to succeed, he’ll need to be a big part of it.
23. Many Bates – Butler Bulldogs
2022-23 stats: 13.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.5 bpg
The former NC State center was known for being a great defender, which he still is to this day. But Bates has grown offensively as well, including opening the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds against New Orleans. He had 22 points and 10 rebounds versus Kansas State as well.
As a team, Butler has struggled, still winless in Big East play. Bates won’t give them 15+ points each game but between his consistent shot-blocking and interior defense and now capable of giving them post-offense, the Bulldogs should be happy with what he’s given them.
