Big Ten Basketball power rankings: Indiana flies up, Michigan crashes down
14. Minnesota Golden Gophers – 7-13 (1-9)
The offense of the Gophers is not only the worst in Big Ten Basketball but also one of the worst in all of college basketball. They rank 349th out of 363 teams nationally with 62.1 ppg but the saving grace has been the defense. In a three-game stretch, they gave up 60, 61, and 61 points recently but unfortunately lost all three since they can’t get to 60 themselves.
Against Michigan, the Gophers were able to limit Hunter Dickinson and the team, tied at 23 at the half. There was a tiny bit of scoring in the second half and Minnesota wasn’t able to keep up, losing 61-57 at the end. Ta’Lon Cooper had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Dawson Garcia and Jamison Battle had 27 points combined in the frontcourt.
The good news is that Minnesota finally scored 60+ points in a game, producing 61 against Northwestern. The problem is that their defense didn’t show up, getting blown out early and losing by 20 points. Battle had 20 points and Cooper had 12 points and five assists but no one else was in double figures.
The Gophers are looking to salvage the season, taking on Rutgers and Maryland this week. They have the chance to play spoiler against the Terrapins, who are squarely on the bubble.
