Texas Tech Red Raiders

It’s a double-edged sword when you know who your next coach is they’re making a run in the NIT Tournament. On the one hand, Grant McCasland making a run for the title with North Texas helps elevate his status as a head coach heading into the Big 12. Yet it also delayed him from becoming the official leader of the Red Raiders and getting started building the coaching staff and overall roster.

It also didn’t help prevent what was left of the roster from transferring out, including a very important piece in Jaylon Tyson. The good news is that they were able to keep Georgia transfer KyeRon Lindsay, along with adding Nevada forward and Mountain West Rookie of the Year Darrion Williams, as well as Grand Canyon transfer guard, Chance McMillan.

A backcourt of McMillan and returning guard Pop Isaacs is solid and Williams is a player with long-term potential, assuming he can make the leap to the Big 12. The problem here is that the roster is clearly worse than last season, which was good for the bottom tier.

There’s also the question of whether Coach McCasland’s ultra-slow style will be appealing enough for transfers. Had star Tylor Perry followed him to Texas Tech, I’d feel okay about their chances. Otherwise, the program could be in a clear rebuilding scenario.
