6. Texas Longhorns

There’s a lot to like about Texas if you’re Johnson. It’s a 3-hour drive from Dallas to Austin and it’s one of two local options for the prospect. They’re also one of four SEC programs in the mix, as the Longhorns will be going to the SEC after next season.

And from a playing time standpoint, Texas is perfect for Johnson. They landed 22 ppg transfer scoring guard Max Abmas from Oral Roberts and he’ll be around for just one more season. Guard Tyrese Hunter would be a senior if he opted to come back after next season but they’d have a veteran ball-handler for Johnson to play with when he arrives.

The problem with the Longhorns, at the moment, is the head coach. Rodney Terry took over when Coach Chris Beard was suspended and ultimately fired for an alleged domestic violence arrest and the interim HC led the program to an Elite 8 appearance. Terry was given the full-time job but his career record before this past year at both Fresno State and UTEP was a combined 163-158 and just one NCAA Tournament appearance.

It’s also concerning that all the five-star prospects connected to Texas (Arterio Morris, Dillon Mitchell, and Ron Holland) have all left the team. So the top NBA Draft recruits may not trust the new head coach so should Johnson? Of all the head coaches, Terry is the least proven and that could prevent them from winning out in this recruitment.
