ASUN Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
6. Caleb Homesley
A 6’6 guard from Indian Trail, North Carolina, Homesley would become one of the most influential players at Liberty in recent memory. He arrived in 2015, the same time current head coach Ritchie McKay was rehired by the program. Homesley’s first three years, including his redshirt as a sophomore, were played in the Big South, but there’s plenty to like about his two years in the ASUN.
He was vital to Liberty’s initial success in their new league, averaging 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds as they won the ASUN title in year one. Most importantly, he had a 30-point performance in their upset win over Mississippi State in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. His numbers as a senior were even more impressive, putting up 15.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game, but the season was shortened by the pandemic right after another ASUN Tournament title.
Scoring a career-high in an NCAA Tournament upset win would certainly be a standout moment in any player’s career. He earned First Team All-ASUN honors for that initial season but was even more impressive as a senior. He was 2020’s ASUN Player of the Year and Tournament MVP. Even though the pandemic prevented another trip to the Big Dance, we really went out with a bang in his impressive college career.
