MEAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
20. Elijah Hawkins
A 5’11 point guard from Washington DC, Hawkins is another former star from DeMatha Catholic High School who experienced success in the MEAC. He arrived at Howard just two seasons ago and carved out a significant role for himself in Kenny Blakeney’s program.
As a freshman, Hawkins averaged 13.0 points and 5.6 assists, with multiple double-digit assists performances early in the season. Year two was just as potent for Hawkins himself but even better for the Bison program. Now averaging 12.9 points and 6.0 assists per game, Hawkins helped lead Howard to the MEAC Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, with 12 points and 8 assists in an opening round loss to Kansas.
The conference’s leader in assists in both seasons, Hawkins was named MEAC Rookie of the Year for his debut and earned First Team All-MEAC honors as a sophomore. He was among the league’s top scorers in both seasons and did all the little things for the Bison’s program. These two years in the MEAC were fantastic for Hawkins, though he has his sights set ahead, as he has transferred to Minnesota for his junior year.
