Washington State Basketball: Projected depth chart and rotation for 2023-24 season
Starting power forward – Andrej Jakimovski
Senior: 2022-23 stats: 7.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.1 APG
Reserves- Fr. Spencer Mahoney, Fr. AJ LaBeau
The power forward position is likely the only one in the starting lineup to have an incumbent keeping his position. Senior Andrej Jakimovski returns after notching 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds while making 21 starts last season. The 6-8 Macedonian recorded a double-double in the regular-season finale win over Washington and averaged almost ten points and 5.6 rebounds over his last eight games. His senior year for the Cougars could be his best yet and that would be a big boost to the Washington State frontcourt.
Behind Jakimovski you are likely to see a pair of freshmen getting rotational minutes at the power forward position. Spencer Mahoney is one of those freshmen, the 6-8 Mahoney averaged 19 points in three games for Red Rock Academy in Las Vegas, he’s a guy with length and has the ability to be a knockdown shooter.
The other first-year player joins the program as a preferred walk-on from Idaho. AJ LaBeau is a 6-10 230lb forward who will likely add situational minutes in his first season in Pullman. Expect Jakimovski and Mahoney to get most of the minutes at the four, and part of the reason for that is that Smith has some choices in the middle he could choose to go with a double-big lineup if he wants.
