Wisconsin Basketball: Projected depth chart and rotation for 2023-24 season
Forward
Starter – Tyler Wahl: 11.3 PPG / 6.3 RPG / 31.5 MPG
After years of steady development, Tyler Wahl is hoping for a grand finale in a Badger uniform. The 6’9″ forward is the most experienced player on the roster, playing in 126 games and making 85 starts over his Wisconsin career and has evolved into a reliable, versatile offensive player. The thing you notice about Wahl every time he steps on the court is his relentless energy; he’s going to give it 100 percent no matter the score. The team feeds off that and his impact goes beyond the stat sheet.
Staying healthy will be the key for the fifth-year senior in 2023-24. He missed several games last season with an ankle injury and even when he returned, he didn’t appear full-go. If he can avoid the injury bug, Wahl will be a key piece to this Badger team all season and will certainly vie for All-Big Ten honors.
Off the bench – Gus Yalden
One of the most talked about names on the roster over the offseason has been true freshman Gus Yalden, a four-star big originally from Appleton, Wisconsin. The 6’9″ forward is a load to handle underneath, but he’s not just a traditional, back-to-the-basket big. He’s got some touch on his jumper and could develop into a really productive offensive contributor in due time. Year One is likely to be about getting him up to speed, but I suspect we’ll still see a lot of “Gus Bus” in 2023-24.
Off the bench – Nolan Winter
The attention paid to Gus Yalden shouldn’t overshadow the other major frontcourt addition of the offseason for the Badgers, Nolan Winter. Winter was a notable steal for Gard and staff from across the border in Minnesota and will immediately bring size up front. While Yalden is a bit stockier, Winter is long and towering, checking in at 6’11”, 190 pounds. The assumption is that he’s not quite as college ready as Yalden, but will still have an opportunity to carve out minutes immediately.
Limited minutes – Markus Ilver
Will we see any growth in minutes for Estonian big Markus Ilver in 2023-24? Unlikely considering the pair of freshmen that have arrived, with Ilver likely to reprise his role as deep bench option. He averaged 6.6 minutes per game over 18 games last season.
