NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Pros and cons of 5-star Boogie Fland’s final 3 teams
Kentucky Wildcats
Pros
What else can I say that isn’t already known about Coach Calipari and Kentucky? The former players have combined to earn over 1 billion dollars at the NBA level, with multiple examples almost every year. The team is an annual top-15 team with all the talent it has and Fland will have the chance to play on the biggest of NCAA Basketball stages if he picks here.
There’s also a really good chance that both incoming five-star guard prospects (Robert Dillingham and DJ Wagner) will go pro, leaving the backcourt wide open for another top guard in the 2024 class to take over. And in a unique circumstance, Kentucky isn’t in the mix for any other top ball-handlers in this class, so Fland wouldn’t have to worry about a Zoom Diallo decision here.
Cons
There’s a slight chance that either Dillingham or Wagner could return for the chance to be the lead guard as a sophomore and national breakout candidate. But the bigger worry would be Coach Calipari opting to get older next season and use the transfer portal. Right now, the team has just one class of 2024 commit (Somto Cyril) and may not want a big class like the 2023 one.
The other thing to watch is the unknown of what kind of role Fland will have, even as a potential lead guard. Will the frontcourt and wing players be the lead options and force this five-star prospect to be more of a role player? Compared to the other two teams, Kentucky’s roster won’t be set until late in the following offseason and the portal could change everything, depending on what Calipari wants to do.
