SEC Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 5 Bruce Pearl, Auburn Tigers
This is where we start getting into the really good coaches in this conference. Bruce Pearl is a renowned coach across college basketball and is one of the better head coaches not only in the conference, but the entire league. Pearl is well known for his time at Tennessee, where he led them to multiple sweet sixteens, elite eights, and first weekend appearances.
He was hired as Auburn’s head coach in 2014 and although his success wasn’t as good, he has still been quite good for the Tigers. He missed the tournament in his first 3 years, but in his 5th year the Tigers went all the way to the final four. However, the Tigers haven’t made it past the round of 32 outside of Auburn’s final four run in 2018-19.
Pearl never missed the tournament in his time at Tennessee, and he may have lost a little bit of an edge when he was forced to leave college basketball for 3 years due to his recruiting scandal. Pearl proved in 2019 he could still coach a team to near the top with final four run. This next season the Tigers should look to get back atop the SEC and if Pearl can create another good run even just out of the first weekend he may solidify himself as one of the better coaches in the SEC.
Pearl and the Tigers can put it together, and if anyone can go on a tourney to prove themselves it’s Bruce Pearl.
