SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2023-24 season
14. LSU Tigers
Last season: 14-19, 2-16 in the SEC
The LSU Tigers enter the 2023-24 season after winning just two games in the SEC this past year. They’ll return five players from last year’s squad and add eight new faces including Jalen Cook (Tulane), Jordan Wright (Vanderbilt), Carlos Stewart (Santa Clara) and Will Baker (Nevada) out of the transfer portal. It could be tough sledding for the Tigers once again in conference action in head coach Matt McMahon’s second season on the sideline.
McMahon will need for a few of their new portal additions to contribute in a big way if they hope to return to the top of the conference. They might find themselves at the bottom of the conference once again by season’s end.
11. Georgia Bulldogs
Last season: 16-16, 6-12 in the SEC
The Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Mike White went .500 in his first season in Athens. He made the move from the Gators looking to revive a program that hasn’t made an NCAA Tournament since 2015. Justin Hill, Jabri Abdur-Rahim, Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and Frank Anselem are the lone returners for them while they’ll add Noah Thomasson (Niagara), Jalen DeLoach (VCU) and Russel Tchewa (South Florida) out of the transfer portal.
They’ve got some underrated guards in Silas Demary Jr. and Blue Cain in their 2023 recruiting class who could contribute right away as well. Look for them to compete and be at a different place once the season starts. For now, they’ll start just outside the Top 10 at No. 11.
