Big Ten Basketball: Ranking of top 25 players entering 2023-24 season
By Joey Loose
22. Mackenzie Mgbako – Indiana
A five-star forward from New Jersey, Mgbako joins the Hoosiers and instantly becomes one of the top freshmen to watch in the Big Ten. He missed part of his final high school season with injury but still put up some really stellar numbers and looks ready to make an impact at Indiana even as a freshman.
This Top 10 recruit can play both forward positions, has the ability to step outside and hit 3-pointers, and also has the athleticism and body to play competitively in the paint. Obviously, he’s still a freshman and has a few things to develop, specifically on the defensive side of the basketball, but he’s a major prospect and a fantastic addition for Mike Woodson’s program.
21. Donta Scott – Maryland
Entering his fifth and final season with the Terrapins, Scott has been an impact player and leader for the last four years at Maryland. A talented forward, he’s averaged double figures each of the last three seasons and has started most of the 129 games he’s already played as a Terrapin. Last season saw his shooting numbers take a slight step back, averaging 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Scott has shown the ability to be a consistent shooter, though he’s right around 30% from long range as an upperclassman. Having someone with this type of experience and leadership is certainly a net positive for Kevin Willard and this program, though they’re certainly hoping Scott can redevelop that outside shot. He can be a major asset for a Terrapins squad that many think can make serious noise this year.
