Virginia Tech Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Hokies
Key Reserves
Depth shouldn’t be an issue for the Hokies in 2023-24 with two hungry sophomores off the bench looking to make an impact. The backcourt is in good hands once Cattoor and Pedulla move on with M.J. Collins and Rodney Rice waiting in the wings.
M.J. Collins, Guard/Wing
Collins should be one of the first names off the bench this season and could find himself in the starting rotation as he did during his freshman year. He started in 16 of 34 appearances in 2022-23, finishing with 4.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg and 1.4 apg across 24.7 minutes per contest. He’s got the potential to grow into a bigger role as he improves on his perimeter shooting. He shot 26.5 percent from deep in his college debut.
Lynn Kidd, Center
Kidd is a big man who should grow in the frontcourt after finishing with 5.0 ppg and 3.4 rpg on 66.4 percent shooting across 34 contests (5 starts) in 2022-23. He’s an athletic big man who’s shown he can operate on both ends of the floor in the painted area.
Mylyjeal Poteat, Forward/Center
Poteat made his debut for the Hokies in his first season out of Rice and made 34 appearances finishing with 3.4 ppg and 2.0 rpg and 64.2 percent shooting from the floor. He’ll look to make a bigger impact with a year of experience under his belt in the ACC.
Tyler Nickel, Guard/Forward
Nickel is another transfer portal addition from UNC who could grow at the wing-forward role along with Mekhi Long in the lineup. He’s a capable ball-handler and a tough-nosed 6-foot-7 presence who’s more than capable of playing in the ACC. He should finish his career with better production in Coach Young’s system.
John Camden, Forward
Camden was another addition out of the portal last year from Memphis in 2022-23. He appeared in 23 contests and averaged 1.3 ppg and 1.0 rpg across 8.0 minutes per game. He’s got room to develop off the bench as an inside-out presence.
