NCAA Basketball: Ranking top 20 Bob Cousy Award players for 2023-24 season
15. DJ Wagner – Kentucky Wildcats
2022-23 season stats: N/A
Wagner is not only a five-star freshman prospect but at one point was ranked No. 1 in the entire 2023 recruiting class. He’s a quality offensive player that can score at all three levels. The question isn’t whether or not he’ll be good at the NCAA Basketball level but rather what kind of usage he’ll have at Kentucky. With Antonio Reeves and other five-star freshmen in the mix, Wagner’s stats may not put him into position.
14. Tristen Newton – UConn Huskies
2022-23 season stats: 10.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, and 4.7 apg
Despite not having the same numbers that he did at ECU, Newton still managed to have a pair of triple-doubles last season. And without both Andre Jackson and Jordan Hawkins around, a case can be made that the 5th-year senior is in position to get an even larger role this year. But with just as much talent on this year’s roster, Newton may end up in the same position as last season when it comes to usage.
13. Judah Mintz – Syracuse Orange
2022-23 season stats: 16.3 ppg and 4.6 apg
Mintz was one of the top freshmen players in all of NCAA Basketball last season and without Joe Girard, could have an even bigger sophomore season. But with Notre Dame transfer JJ Starling, maybe things won’t change too much after all. In order for Mintz to have a shot here, Syracuse, as a team, has a take a big leap in the ACC standings.
