Projected Starters

Guard – Tristen Newton (Senior)

A brilliant point guard who played his best ball in the postseason last year, Newton joined the Huskies just last year after spending his first three years at East Carolina. He’d average 10.1 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game as a major weapon for the Huskies, including a 36% mark from outside the arc. Newton had 19 points and a double-double in the national title game and could be an even more important offensive piece this year.

Guard – Cam Spencer (Senior)

The major offseason addition by way of the Transfer Portal, Spencer joins the Huskies for his fifth season of college ball. He spent three years at Loyola-Maryland, though he played just five games as a sophomore. After incredible scoring numbers as a junior, he spent last season at Rutgers, averaging 13.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game as a key cog for the Scarlet Knights. Spencer also knocked down 43% of his outside shots and his elite shooting touch will be welcomed this year.

Guard – Stephon Castle (Freshman)

The key piece of a Top 10 recruiting class, Castle is a 5-star guard from Georgia who projects to play a major role right away at UConn. He got significant run before the college level, playing internationally for Team USA during the U18 and projects as someone who can factor in all over the court. He’s not going to come in and light it up from outside the arc, but he’ll generate plenty of offense for the Huskies.

Forward – Alex Karaban (Sophomore)

After sitting out his first season, Karaban stepped into a major role in UConn’s frontcourt as a redshirt freshman last year. Starting all but one of the Huskies’ games, Karaban averaged 9.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He made 40% of his 3-pointers and was a versatile part of the team’s run to the title; now even more is expected of him as a sophomore, especially on the defensive end.

Center – Donovan Clingan (Sophomore)

Despite being a freshman and playing behind a star in Adama Sanogo, Clingan got decent run last season and is in for a major role in year two. This 7’2 center averaged 6.9 points and 5.6 rebounds in his first season and should be significantly more impactful now that he’s the main man in the paint. Many expect a breakout campaign from Clingan, whose size and productivity were already a game changer last season.
