NCAA Basketball: Power Ranking every team (362-1) for 2023-24 season
By Bryan Mauro
5. UConn Huskies – Last Season Ranking: 31
Conference: Big East
The Huskies enter the season ranked in the top 5 and looking to win the Big East regular season and repeating for the National Title. Donovan Clingan is 7’2” tall and is one of the best big men in the country. Clingan had a huge season for the National Champions. He played in every game for the Huskies and holds the record for field goal percentage. Clingan is going to get most of the minutes at the center spot for the Huskies and head coach Dan Hurley so we will see if he can reach those numbers. Clingan is going to be in the mix for the National Player of the Year and he might just win it.
4. Duke Blue Devils – Last Season Ranking: 10
Conference: ACC
This season the Blue Devils find themselves in the top 5 with legitimate National Title aspirations. Duke had one of the top recruiting classes in the country and coach Scheyer was able to retain most of his top talent from a season ago. Duke should win the ACC regular season and find themselves on the 1 seed line come March. Kyle Filipowski had a decorated freshman year for the Blue Devils. He took home the ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC tournament MVP, Honorable Mention All-American, and the National Freshman of the Year. He is only the fourth player in ACC history to be named the conference freshman of the year and the tournament MVP in the same season. He joins Zion Williamson as the only other Duke player to accomplish the feat.
3. Michigan State Spartans – Last Season Ranking: 37
Conference: Big Ten
This year the Spartans are quickly back in the National Title conversation and find themselves back in the preseason rankings. The freshman class is fantastic and has some potential lottery picks. The returning players are a mix of stars and depth pieces that make Michigan State one of the favorites in the Big Ten. Michigan State finds themselves in the top 10 to start the season and it would be surprising if they do not earn a top seed in the NCAA tournament in March. Tyson Walker had a fantastic first year running the offense for the Spartans. Last season the guard played almost exclusively at the point guard position, but coach Izzo has suggested that the guard will be playing both guard spots this year to maximize his time on the floor. Walker may not lead the team in scoring this year, but he is the most important player for Michigan State. He is the best point guard they have had since Cassius Winston and will be a first team all-conference player.
2. Purdue Boilermakers – Last Season Ranking: 29
Conference: Big Ten
Head coach Matt Painter and the rest of the Purdue faithful are hoping that the Boilermakers can have the same results that the last team who got beat by a 16 seed did. Virginia won the National Title the year after they were upset by a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament. Can the Boilermakers do that? Do they have enough talent to win the National Title? I say yes, Purdue heads into the season ranked in the top 5 and have 90% of their team returning from last season. Coach Painter is a one of the best coaches in the game and I know that loss last year still stings, and it is sitting with him. The Boilermakers are going to come out and make sure that doesn’t happen again. Purdue has a ton of shooting; they are going to play fantastic defense.
Purdue got a huge win with Zach Edey decided to come back to play his final season for the Boilermakers. Edey won the National Player of the Year going away last year. The 7’4” 285 pound big man dominated in almost every game he played a season ago. He averaged 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. The big man didn’t just win the Wooden Award. He swept all the awards given Purdue heads into the season as a National Title favorite and don’t be surprised if they win it, especially given how last season ended.
1. Kansas Jayhawks – Last Season Ranking: 4
Conference: Big 12
Kansas enters the year as the preseason number 1 and the overwhelming favorite to win the National Title. Hunter Dickinson was the best transfer in the portal this offseason and to be honest it was surprising when he decided to transfer. The center has already had a great career and heads to Kansas averaging 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game over his career.
Dickinson is one of the best big men in the country and there is no better coach to play for than coach Self. Coach Self is going to get him the ball in the low block and allow him to go to work with easy baskets. The Jayhawks big man will be a unanimous first team All-American.
