Big Ten Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 11: Chris Collins, Northwestern Wildcats
Chris Collins has been in college basketball for nearly 25 years and he has led Northwestern to some big heights in his time there, they seem to be few and far between.
Collins played for Duke in the mid 90s from 1992-96, and played in Finland for 2 years after that. He then went on to be an assistant coach, most notably for coach K at Duke from 2000-2013. He took the Northwestern job when it opened, and has been there since the 2013-14 season.
Collins has a 153-161 record with the Wildcats, and while that may not seem good, he has led the Wildcats to unfathomable heights. In the 2016-17 season he led Northwestern to their best season in ages. He led them to their best conference record in 49 years, got their first winning conference record in school history, made their first NCAA tournament, and won their first tourney game in the history of the program. Collins has certainly made his mark on the program.
Since then it has been middling results for Collins, until last season where they went 22-12 and made the NCAA tournament again. They beat 1st ranked Purdue and 15th ranked Indiana in back to back games last regular season, which is huge for a program like Northwestern. They eventually lost to UCLA in the second round 68-64 of the tournament last year.
Collins is doing the best he can there, and with what he is working with, Collins is doing a great job. Even if the winning seasons are very few and far between.
